Real Madrid Castilla coach Raul praises Rodrygo Goes after goalscoring performanceby Carlos Volcanoa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveReal Madrid Castilla coach Raul praised Rodrygo Goes after victory over Rayo Majadahonda.Rodrygo Goes dropped down to Raul’s side after scoring with the first team in midweek against Osasuna. The 18-year-old continued his goalscoring form by netting the second goal in the 3-1 win, and Raul was asked a host of questions about Rodrygo after the game.”Rodrygo motivates himself,” Raul said.”From the beginning, the situation with him has been clear: he is a first-team player but when he can help Castilla, or Castilla can help him, he will come and play.”He has played at a high level [with Santos in Brazil and in midweek for Real Madrid] and has sacrificed himself, like all of his teammates.”[On Friday] he was training with us, and although we don’t know each other that well, every time that he comes [and trains with Castilla], he gives his all and everyone sees his potential.”He will be watching his progression and knocking down doors.”When asked about Rodrygo’s characteristics, Raul seemed to be lost for words.”Rodrygo has everything,” he noted. “He can score, join attacks, help back in defence… Today we asked him to do a lot of things he is not used to doing and he worked really hard.”In the first half we were far superior and in the second we were made to suffer, yet he was always willing to help.”I’m very happy with him and the whole team.” About the authorCarlos VolcanoShare the loveHave your say

Connor Wickham scored his first goal in more than two years as Crystal Palace compounded a miserable week for Tottenham with a 2-0 FA Cup fourth-round win at Selhurst Park.Wickham had not started a match for Palace since November 2016, thanks largely to a long-term knee injury, but he needed just nine minutes to score his first goal in 799 days as a Spurs side featuring eight changes started slowly.Palace kept the pressure on and won a penalty that ex-Spurs winger Andros Townsend converted after 34 minutes, and when Tottenham won a spot-kick of their own at the other end Kieran Trippier blasted it well wide. Neymar is not right for Real Madrid, says Ramon Calderon, but Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba could be if there is a deal to be done at the right price. Those at the Santiago Bernabeu are being linked with several star names ahead of the summer transfer window.Club president Florentino Perez is expected to go back to his famed ‘Galacticos’ recruitment policy amid links to world-class talent in France, England and Germany. A number of the moves reportedly being lined up have been mooted for some time, with the likes of Neymar and Pogba long-standing targets for the Blancos.Calderon believes efforts will be made to make marquee additions, but feels a raid on Old Trafford would be preferable to one on the books at Paris Saint-Germain.The former Real president told Sky Sports: “Neymar is a top player but I don’t see him – his behaviour in the last games he has played – as being the best reference for coming to Real Madrid.“Pogba? Maybe. He is one of the players that [Zinedine] Zidane has said he really likes.“It would be a problem of money. Our president has decided to invest a ridiculous amount of money in the new stadium because we already have a fantastic stadium.”While expecting incoming movement at the Bernabeu, Calderon also sees high-profile departures being made.Zidane needs to freshen up a squad that underperformed badly in the 2018-19 campaign.Gareth Bale is among those expected to head for the exits, with the Wales international having fallen out of favour with those on the bench and in the stands.Calderon added on a proven performer who has been linked with a return to the Premier League at either Manchester United or Tottenham: “It’s a pity what is happening with Gareth Bale. I like him.“He came here with the great handicap that we paid for him more money than we did for Cristiano [Ronaldo].“It’s not fair but fans think that he will be scoring more goals than Cristiano, playing better, helping the team much more than Cristiano. That’s impossible.“They have perceived some lack of commitment. He doesn’t speak Spanish so he couldn’t communicate.“Maybe that’s the best destination for him, a loan to a British club, and try to recover the confidence and try to again be the player that he has been for the last 10 years.”
Luka Jovic feels he can play alongside Karim Benzema in the same team but indicated he is happy to let Zinedine Zidane decide how to use him at Real Madrid.Serbia striker Jovic signed a six-year deal to join Los Blancos after hitting 27 goals in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt last term.Jovic’s €70 million (£62m/$79m) arrival is part of a major rebuild for Madrid after a disappointing campaign, with Eden Hazard, Eder Militao, Rodrygo Goes and Ferland Mendy also arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu. Benzema hit 21 La Liga goals in 2018-19 and was one of the few Madrid players to impress, although Jovic could usurp him in the team. The 21-year-old, though, suggested at his Madrid unveiling on Wednesday that he and Benzema are “compatible”.”When he [Benzema] arrived [at Real Madrid], I was 11,” Jovic told a news conference.”He’s one of the best in the world and I hope to learn a lot from him.”I think we’re compatible, but Zidane will be the one to decide.”I have not spoken with Zidane and at Eintracht I played up front [on his own] or with other strikers.” Madrid president Florentino Perez claimed Madrid saw off competition from some of Europe’s elite clubs to sign Jovic.Barcelona were rumoured to have watched the forward earlier in the year but the striker says he was unaware of interest from any clubs other than Madrid.”I did not know of any other offer,” Jovic said. “I was not aware of any other offer that was not from Madrid. I spoke with my agent, he told me about the Madrid offer and I accepted it quickly.”Jovic has not yet been assigned a squad number but, with the No.7 and No.11 shirts already occupied by Mariano Diaz and Gareth Bale respectively, and with Hazard also arriving, he insists it does not matter what he gets.”The number does not matter and it is not important,” he added.Jovic has already been on a charm offensive with Madrid fans since joining, claiming that he used to sleep in the shirt of Cristiano Ronaldo as a child. However, following a huge summer outlay at the club, there will be little room for sentiment and he will be expected to hit the ground running at the Bernabeu.Jovic showed little sign of being distracted by the attention around him over the international break, scoring a stunning goal in Serbia’s 4-1 demolition of Lithuania in their European Championship qualifier.
