Rice to Celebrate Past Future of Technology Advances

first_imgAddThis Share CONTACT: Lia Unrau PHONE: (713)831-4793E-MAIL: [email protected] RICE TO CELEBRATE PAST, FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES People who love their cellularphones, compact disk players and digital cameras and look forward to the futureinformation age have a largely unknown technology to thank–Digital SignalProcessing.Rice University will celebrate 30 years of Digital SignalProcessing (DSP) and look ahead to its future with a series of alumni, facultyand guest lectures and panels, featuring some of the top researchers in thefield, on Feb. 19, 8 a.m to 5 p.m., in McMurtry Auditorium in the Anne andCharles Duncan Hall. The anniversary celebration will include presentations and apanel discussion on “The Future of DSP.” The future information age will befueled by DSP technology such as digital cameras and television, multimedia,wireless networks and speech recognition.Digital Signal Processing is the transformation of data–suchas signals, images and video–to better transmit or use the information. DSP hasnumerous applications in the fields of communications, multimedia andimaging.The creation of digital techniques in the ’60s and ’70s, manyinitiated at Rice, played an important role in turning this research field intoessential technology for computer modems, medical diagnosis imaging, satelliteimaging and seismic data analyzers.Arun Netravali, executive vice president of research at BellLaboratories/Lucent Technologies, will kick off the celebration with a lecture, “Communications R/Evolution” on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. in McMurtryAuditorium.On Feb. 19, among the speakers for the alumni presentations areJim McClellan, Georgia Tech, signal processing systems; Maite Brandt-Pearce,University of Virginia, wireless communications; Julius Smith, StanfordUniversity, computer music; and John Treichler, vice president of research,Applied Signal Technologies, high-speed modem communications.A panel discussion on “The Future of DSP” is to includeTreichler, Netravali, Gene Frantz, a fellow at Texas Instruments, and LarryMarple, chief scientist, Orincon Corporation.Frantz will also give a presentation about DSP in industry, andJames Kaiser of Bellcore will present the “History of DSP at RiceUniversity.”Rice faculty in electrical and computer engineering DonJohnson, Richard Baraniuk, Benhaam Aazhang and Joe Cavallaro will givepresentations about the future of DSP at Rice.Rice President Malcolm Gillis and the first researchers to workon DSP at Rice, Sidney Burrus, dean of the George R. Brown School ofEngineering, and Tom Parks, currently of Cornell University, will speak at aspecial dinner that evening.DSP at Rice began in 1968, when Burrus and Parks jointly taughtthe first course in DSP.
