Rep Roberts statement on State of the State and Flint water issue

first_img State Rep. Brett Roberts, R-Eaton Township, issued the following statement after Gov. Rick Snyder’s 2016 State of the State address:“Last night, Gov. Snyder touched on a multitude of issues in Michigan, namely the Flint water crisis. When news of Flint’s situation reached the Legislature in October, we responded immediately to give the city a quick transition back to the Detroit Water and Sewer Department system.“It is imperative that we consider the health of Michiganders across the state at all times. I empathize with the frustrated residents of the city, and vow to continue to do everything in my power to address this issue. I will be working to see that swift action is carried out again to help the people of Flint to the best of our abilities.“Words have no meaning unless they can be backed up with action. Today, I voted in favor of new legislation that will give Flint the funds that it needs to make sure that Flint residents have all of the resources they need. This legislation will ensure that every Flint resident receives a water filter, every resident has clean drinking water, and families and kids receive the healthcare they need to accurately monitor and treat any medical complications they have. This will also be another step in getting Flint’s water system back on track.“Gov. Snyder also touched on the need for continued economic growth. Michigan performed extremely well in 2015. The unemployment rate dropped lower than the national average for the first time in more than a decade, Michigan businesses created 420,000 new jobs, and was rated as the fastest-growing economy in the Midwest.“Michigan is growing, but we can’t stop now. Increasing education on skilled trades is paramount to creating an even healthier Michigan economy. We need to expel the myth that you need a college degree to get a job in the U.S. Trade jobs are respectable and pay well. Jobs like this allow us a window into Michigan’s future, and supporting these industries will serve the entire state well.”###Editor’s Note: Rep.
