Tom Eric Vraalsen, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs for Sudan, will also discuss with the Government how to impose a ceasefire in Darfur so that humanitarian workers can reach all of those in need.Mr. Vraalsen’s mission is at the request of UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland after President Omer Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir made his promise on Monday.The UN estimates that half of Darfur’s population of 6 million needs humanitarian assistance since the conflict between rebel groups, the Sudanese Government and militias began nearly a year ago. There have been numerous reports of murders, abductions, looting and burning during attacks on villages in the region.More than 700,000 Sudanese are thought to be internally displaced by the conflict, while at least another 110,000 others have fled across the border to neighbouring Chad.
