King of Karate in Khayelitsha

first_imgSensei Monwabisi Njomba has taken the lessons he learnt mastering martial arts and used them to develop the minds and bodies of young people in Cape Town.Monwabisi Njomba (right) is a trained martial arts teacher, who learnt valuable lessons and healthy living. He is now inspiring young people and others in the community through his Njomba Fitness Academy in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. (Image: Monwabisi Njomba Facebook)CD AndersonSensei Monwabisi Njomba got his start in karate, kung fu and other martial arts as a young man in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape. When he moved to Cape Town in 2010, he had a dream of opening his own dojo, or martial arts gym, for youngsters who wanted to learn both the physical and mental pillars of the ancient arts of self-defence.“I always had a heart for young people and decided to pursue the idea of opening my own gym. I then started Njomba Fitness Academy [in Khayelitsha] to try to bring young people together through fitness and prevent them from doing wrong,” he told News24.The academy started small, at the township’s Eyethu Hall and set up with only the most rudimentary equipment and his knowledge of martial arts. But the idea soon found an appreciative audience. Children in the area approached the academy in droves, inspired, like Njomba when he was young, to learn the quick and agile moves made famous by films stars such Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris.Njomba says the principles of karate and other martial arts are not only about strength and physical power, but also about self-discipline and mental focus. “I always kept my head high because I was passionate about karate,” he says, and he is doing his best to instil that same self-belief in his young students. The academy is not only for the young, with many older residents learning the more delicate though equally fulfilling practices of yoga and Pilates. He also teaches basic self-defence methods to women and organises aerobics classes and fun runs. While the main focus of the academy is martial arts, Njomba ensures there is something for everyone in the community.“My main aim [for the community] is to keep the young people fit and help elders to live healthy and better lives.”Right now, Njomba’s biggest challenge is keeping the academy running, and he is always on the lookout for new sponsors and companies interested in partnering with the gym to be able to continue giving the residents a place to make friends, and learn tolerance and healthy living.“We don’t have proper gear [for karate] and sometimes transport is a hassle when we want to go to championships. But we keep our heads high and try to help the young ones who are passionate about the sport,” Njomba said. The popularity of the Njomba Fitness Academy is growing, and for the founder himself, its success is the fulfilment of his life’s dream to bring karate to the community. “I really love what I do… I believe everyone needs to exercise in order to live a healthy life.”Watch a video of Njomba and his Fitness Academy on the News24/Beautiful News website.Source: News24/Beautiful News, Monwabisi Njomba FacebookWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Will 2015 be the perfect storm for marestail?

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest This spring is shaping up to be one where marestail control problems abound, based on the following:1. Not many fields were treated with herbicide last fall due to wet weather and the late harvest. Fall treatment results in a field free of overwintered marestail in spring, which takes the pressure off spring burndown treatments — they just have to control the newly emerging small marestail. One strategy to compensate for lack of fall treatment is to apply herbicide early in spring when overwintered marestail plants are still small, but….2. Wet weather so far this spring has largely prevented application of burndown herbicides which means that……3. When we can finally apply spring burndown treatments, they have to be comprehensive enough to control fairly old, overwintered marestail. We know that the standard-rate glyphosate/2,4-D burndown can struggle in this situation, so some modification/replacement of this may be warranted. Some possible modifications to consider:• Increase the 2,4-D rate from 0.5 to 1.0 pound active ingredient per acre, which can improve control by 10% to 20% in our experience, possibly not enough in late April. Certain 2,4-D ester products are labeled for application at 1.0 pound per acre when applied at least 15 days before soybean planting.• Add metribuzin, which has burndown and residual activity on marestail. It works especially well with Gramoxone, Liberty, or Sharpen• Replace 2,4-D with Sharpen. This can still be inconsistent on larger marestail, but adding Sharpen to a glyphosate/2,4-D mixture is a more consistently effective option.• Replace the glyphosate with Gramoxone or Liberty. Three-way combinations of Gramoxone or Liberty plus metribuzin plus 2,4-D are strongly recommended here. Use high rates of Liberty or Gramoxone. Ensuring the performance of most of the modifications listed above will require optimization of spray parameters and adjuvants. For example, Gramoxone, Liberty, and Sharpen should be applied in a spray volume of at least 15 gallons per acre, and MSO should be included in Sharpen-containing treatments. Keep in mind also that use of Sharpen may necessitate a change in the residual herbicides used this spring.Current labeling requires mixtures of Sharpen at one ounce per acre with products containing flumioxazin, sulfentrazone, or fomesafen to be applied at least 14 days before planting on most soils. There are no restrictions of this type for mixtures of Sharpen with any other residual herbicide, including Canopy, metribuzin, and Matador among others, which just have to be applied before soybeans emerge. Growers who at this point know that they will be making a change in burndown programs to apply Sharpen within 14 days of planting may want to discuss residual herbicide options with their supplier before availability of certain products becomes limited. When we make recommendations for this situation, know that we are basing them on the average marestail population in the state. This “average” population has a fairly high level of resistance to glyphosate and is also resistant to group 2 herbicides (ALS inhibitors — Classic, FirstRate, etc). We know that in late spring the 2,4-D will have to carry most of the load in a mixture of glyphosate + 2,4-D, and that 2,4-D only provides about 75% control of marestail that are past the small rosette stage. It’s possible that in some areas of the state, marestail still responds at least somewhat to glyphosate, with the result that the glyphosate/2,4-D mixture is still sufficiently active even in late spring. Your experience can be your guide to some extent here, but know that there will be no later options to control plants that survive an ineffective burndown. To see an in-field Youtube video that covers this same subject, “Considerations for managing marestail in a wet spring, follow this link – http://youtu.be/EUG3y-jBuP0. Mercedes comes up with leaner and fitter AMG GT

first_img2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GTGerman car maker Mercedes Benz is never short of surprises for potential buyers and motoring enthusiasts alike. The company has now come up with a replacement for the erstwhile SLS AMG, called as the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT.  The latest SLS AMG sports coupe is as wide and low-slung as ever, albeit this time with a new look. While it was fitted with gullwing doors earlier, the GT comes with a pair of conventional doors. Under its skin, the vehicle’s super light aluminum space frame weighs just 231kg (before adding engine, body, interior, and the rest of the car for the kerb weight). Aerodynamics have also been redesigned to enhance performance and cooling. Not to be left behind, the supercharged engine in the new Mercedes AMG GT is a first of its kind.Engine and performanceUnder the hood of this sports car is a newly developed 4.0-liter V-8 bi-turbo engine, dubbed as the M178. Instead of keeping the turbos off of the side of the engine, AMG has tucked them into the middle of the V-shaped cylinder bank. This “hot inside V” configuration, as Mercedes calls it, will be capable of optimizing turbocharger responsiveness, plus help in reducing exhaust emissions by boosting thermal efficiency, thereby allowing the engine package to be more compact. With revolutionary dry sump lubrication, like the same on purpose built racing cars, allows the engine to be mounted lower in the chassis and farther back behind the front wheels, giving the GT a “front midengine” configuration. By going dry-sump, the engine is also able to lubricate itself in a better manner during high-G cornering. advertisementMercedes-AMG GT coupes will be available in GT and GT S trim levels. The base-level GT outputs 456 bhp of power with 600.6 Nm of peak torque. This gives the vehicle lighting fast acceleration- 0- 100 kmph is achieved in just 3.9 seconds. The engine of the GT is connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmissionThe other trim GT S is good to deliver 503 bhp and 649.4 Nm peak torque. 0-100 kmph comes up in a lesser 3.7 seconds.Suspension setupA lightweight chassis, low center of gravity and a wide, well-balanced footprint make for a brilliant handling sports car. Mercedes AMG GT comes with double wishbone suspension at all four corners to help keep the wheels glued to the tarmac. The GT S goes a notch higher in this regard, with an electronically controlled damping that allows the driver to adjust ride characteristics between Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes at the touch of a button. With the addition of optional dynamic engine and transmission mounts, performance can then be further upgraded for optimal responsiveness. Optional ceramic brakes, forged wheels and specially developed tyres to boost the performance (and the price tag) of the new GT S are also available. Cabin technology and safetyIn the aviation-themed cabin of the AMG GT, drivers will get to interact with the engine’s various modes and settings via the AMG Drive Unit controls on the center console. Eight buttons and knobs (akin to the cylinders of a V-8) tweak everything from the active exhaust to the adaptive suspension and drive modes. Not much information is available about the Comand infotainment at the top of the dashboard, but we can tell that it will be accessible via a control knob in the middle of the center console,In terms of safety, the AMG GT will come with Mercedes-Benz’ standard collision prevention assist with Pre-Safe, adaptive braking, Attention Assist, parking proximity sensors, as well as a rearview camera. Optional extras will include a Lane Tracking package here.Market availabilityIt is expected that  the 2016 AMG GT S will be launched in the US first,  in the spring of 2015. Subsequently, AMG GT will be launched in the following year. The vehicle is expected to whip up a fresh threat of attacks on the current sportscar king, Porsche 911. Others in line for the coveted crown in this segment are the Audi R8 and higher versions of the Jaguar F-type.last_img read more
